You Wanting Me and Me Wanting You | Cyprus Poems

Young girl overwhelmed by a stack of books, symbolizing the weight of piety and inner struggles. A coming-of-age poem from the series Cyprus Poems.
A Young Woman Finding Solace in Books

The Sixties was a good time to be young
but you had barricades inside your head.
Alarm bells and sirens went off
every time you tried to cross the line.

Resisting all thoughts of impropriety
you fought me off with so much bravery
and all year long you wore a cross
of sainthood around your blushing neck.

Words - a poem by Chris Zachariou

An Angry Young Woman
An Angry Young Woman

Our only reality— words
their beauty the lovechild of minds alike.

Now a new world is dawning.
The mast that dared touch the sun
is broken and the yellow boat is leaking.

The street party - a poem by Chris Zachariou

loneliness in a crowded place
loneliness in a crowded place

Tonight the street is so dark
that it seems it's nearly bright
and a lusty giggly moon
is crawling up the sky.

The muse has fled - a poem by Chris Zachariou

love, loss, loneliness
loss

Unhappy and betrayed
the butterfly has fled her shelter.
Now the humbled word smith
works late into the night
weaving words to write a song
but words do not come easy
and their rhymes no longer chime.

Oblivion at last - a poem by Chris Zachariou

schizophrenia
oblivion

I've come back to you

but you are angry with me.
Hissing, spitting, screaming.

Don't send me away again
shelter me in your blackness.
Please save me from the voices.
